Features of steel structure:
1. High material strength and light weight
Steel has high strength and elastic modulus. Compared with concrete and wood, the ratio of density to yield strength is relatively low, so under the same stress conditions, the member section of steel structure is small, the dead weight is light, the transportation and installation are convenient, and the steel structure is suitable for structures with large span, high height and heavy load.
2. Steel has good toughness and plasticity, uniform material and high structural reliability
It is suitable for bearing impact and dynamic load and has good seismic performance. The internal microstructure of steel is uniform, close to isotropic homogeneous body. The actual working performance of steel structure is in line with the calculation theory. Therefore, the steel structure has high reliability.
3. High degree of mechanization in manufacture and installation of steel structure
Steel structure members are easy to be manufactured in factories and assembled on site. The mechanized manufacturing of steel structure components in the factory has high precision, high production efficiency, fast site assembly speed and short construction period. Steel structure is one of the structures with the highest degree of industrialization.
4. Steel structure has good sealing performance
As the welded structure can be completely sealed, it can be made into high-pressure vessels, large oil pools, pressure pipelines, etc. with good air tightness and water tightness.
5. Steel structure is heat-resistant but no fire-resistant
When the temperature is below 150°C, the property of steel changes little. Therefore, the steel structure is suitable for thermal workshops, but when the surface of the structure is exposed to heat radiation at about 150°C, heat insulation boards shall be used to protect it. When the temperature is between 300°C and 400°C, the strength and elastic modulus of the steel decrease significantly, and when the temperature is about 600°C, the strength of the steel tends to zero. In buildings with special fire prevention requirements, steel structures must be protected by refractory materials to improve the fire resistance grade.
6. Steel structure has poor corrosion resistance
Especially in humid and corrosive medium environment, it is easy to rust. Generally, steel structures shall be derusted, galvanized or coated, and regularly maintained. For offshore platform structures in seawater, special measures such as "zinc block anode protection" shall be adopted to prevent corrosion.
7. Low carbon, energy saving, environmental protection and reusable
Demolition of steel structure buildings hardly produces construction waste, and steel can be recycled.
For steel structures, high-strength steel shall be studied to greatly improve its yield point strength. In addition, new varieties of section steel, such as H-section steel (also known as wide flange section steel), T-section steel and profiled steel plate, shall be rolled to meet the needs of long-span structures and super high-rise buildings.
